HS-SPME-GC/MS Method for the Simultaneous Determination of Trihalomethanes, Geosmin, and 2-Methylisoborneol in Water Samples

Drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) use chlorination as an oxidation stage in the first step of processes used to eliminate natural organic matter (NOM) responsible for formation 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and Geosmin (GM), which produce odor taste water. However, give rise disinfectant toxic subproducts, such trihalomethanes (THMs). In this work, a headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometric method has been developed quality control drinking 2-MIB, GM, THMs at different stages process were monitored. The was validated following Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Neither carryover nor matrix effect observed. performance satisfactory terms selectivity, repeatability, accuracy exhibited linear concentration range 0.8–50 µg/L trichloromethane (TCM), 0.05–20 bromodichloromethane, 0.01–20 dibromochloromethane tribromomethane, 0.005–0.05 GM 2-MIB. obtained all samples below thresholds established by international organizations and, 2-MIB lower their limit quantification. also applied adsorption kinetic study TCM on granulated activated carbon, is main barrier reducing NOM DWTP.
